Ancestral was founded by Joel Mick, whose extensive involvement with Magic dates back to 1992 when he was one of the playtesters Richard Garfield enlisted to help develop Magic prior to its publication.
Richard Garfield hired Joel in 1994 to assume Richard's role as lead designer for Magic. Joel later served as Vice President of Magic brand, where he was responsible for establishing the early standards for Magic card design and development, as well as for the introduction of card rarity symbols, card numbers and foil cards. Joel was also one of the principal designers of Antiquities, Mirage and Visions.
Joel is an avid Magic player and collector. His collecting interests include graded alpha cards, pre-publication playtest cards and painted first edition (beta) artist proofs. Joel enjoys playing Old School, Legacy, and Alpha 40.
